Are there Antibiotics in my Food?

Have you ever considered that antibiotics and other drugs that might be hiding in your burger?

A Sept 27 2017 study the National Resources Defense Council published their annual report, Chain Reaction, which report ranks the top 25 U.S. fast-food and casual restaurant examined the  25 top restaurants in America and tested there meats to check for antibiotic use.

As you might guess the results were grim and concluded that consumers should avoid some of these food chains. Starbucks rated a mesly D+ and Subway ranked in at B+! Shocker!

  • While Starbucks has publicly stated to ‘the responsible use of antibiotics to support animal health,’ the company still found to use antibiotics in its meat supply.

Chipotle and Panera Bread ranked highest with a A rating.

On the other end of the spectrum, Applebee's, Dominos and IHop scrap the bottom of the chart with F Bombs. As one CNN commentator stated, “what we eat could come back to bite us”.

Why do is the use of antibiotics so rampant in meat products?

"These drugs have historically been given to animals that are not sick, to accelerate weight gain and prevent disease in crowded and unsanitary industrial farming conditions," wrote the authors, who come from six public interest groups including the Natural Resources Defense Council, Consumers Union and the Center for Food Safety.

Wendy’s, Olive Garden, Chili’s, Denny’s, Papa John’s Pizza, Pizza Hut, Applebee’s, Jack in the Box, Arby’s, Dairy Queen, Outback Steakhouse, and Little Caesars have no disclosed policy on antibiotics use in their meat and poultry.

“Fast food restaurants are major purchasers of meat and poultry,” says Jean Halloran, director of Food Policy Initiatives at Consumers Union. “When they switch to meat and poultry raised without antibiotics, it can affect the entire supply chain.”

Is Commercial Dairy Safe?

A recent study examined samples from over 2000 different dairy farms and half of the best companies had product with drug residues. It was found out that 4-6 types of different drugs are injected in the cows which make them produce milk fast and on daily purposes.  The effects of this practice are a concern as the consumer is now unknowingly consuming drugs and drug residues that can can be harmful health by causing a disruption in our ancestral strains of gut flora thus creating dysbiosis and adding a toxic burden to the liver.

In the final analysis, if you desire to remain healthy is more important than ever to only purchase and eat organic meats and dairy and to be informed about which restaurants are using the best practices.
